Beginner's Anime Vocabulary

Anime

Eastern cartoons produced by oriental animation studios, usually based off of Japanese or Korean comics called manga. (Usually characterized by large detailed eyes, weird hair, and yelling the name of your attack before firing off that attack)

Manga

Pretty much an oriental comic, read backwards from western formats

Isekai

A show or story where the protagonist is part of the modern day world but is either summoned, reincarnated, or somehow moved to a fantasy or parallel world. (i.e. Rising of the Shield Hero, Saga of Tanya the Evil, Jobless Reincarnation, Overlord, etc.)

Shounen

A fighting anime (shounen means boy in Japanese, so a boy-oriented story)

Shojo

A romantic or drama anime or manga (shojo means girl-girl oriented story)

OP

The opening theme song for an anime

OST

Original Soundtrack (the songs made for and published with an anime)

Harem

An anime where there are multiple love interests for the protagonist (usually meant for mature audiences)

Fanservice

Fanservice is pretty much the worst thing ever created, it refers to sexual elements of a story or character that are added to attract a larger audience. (if a show succumbs to fanservice that usually means it is in F-TIER and not worth watching)

This blog may contain some vocabulary that is unusual to some readers. Above are the definitions of some common words used in this blog that may be unfamiliar to those who have not watched a lot of anime.
